The Cobbers' Club was formed to support and send comforts to Holden employees who joined the Armed Forces.
As published in the March, 1944 issue of Pointers:"Comforts for Cobbers" Club was registerd in July 1940, as a Patriotic Fund, with the folowing objectives: To send comforts to former employees of the Company serving in the Forces, and where found necessary after proper investigation, to provide relief to their dependents; and finally, to render some assistance towards the rehabilitation of the man himself." There were 565 "Cobbers" on the roll call.
Each month, they were sent food, particuarly fruit cake, personal items (shaving soap and razors, toothbrush and paste, etc) plus a copy of Pointers Magazine and the Cobbers' Club News. From the many letters published from the troops, these were all greatly appreciated.
It seems that the troops were well supplied, as A.C.1. Robert Hutchenson wrote from Darwin: "The only thing that is a bit unnecessary for me here was the shaving soap. I have 5 sticks now, so should pretty much see out the war in that line"!
The News was produced on one foolscap page, printed on both sides, which was folded in the middle to make a four page leaflet. They were issued nominally every week, but sometimes fortnightly.
Some of the scans are longitudinal, so you will need to rotate them in your pdf reader to view them.
